Jim Davis over writes Garfield. Evidence? Very often, the comic is actually funny when Garfield's thought balloons are removed. Perhaps that means the comic as it stands with Garfield imagining snarky comments have run its course, and reestablishing Jon Arbuckle as the protagonist is what is needed to vitalize the strip.

The Comic Strip Doctor has more on this.

We're talking about a comic strip that had pretty much run through its repertoire by the end of 1982.

The problem isn't Garfield's thought balloons; it's about making a slot on the comics pages more perpetual than a Supreme Court appointment. At least those guys lose their seat when they die.
