It's been 10 years since a boy and his tiger had free reign over the comics page.

I don't know what is going on with that page about Tom Cruise and Scientology at Yahoo News. Last it was the site confusing pop idols who don't look very much alike. Today on that page, they post a picture of a reclusive comic artist. Fortunately they identified the man correctly as Bill Watterson. Unfortunately, clicking on the picture leads to a blank page.

You never, ever see Bill Watterson in the newspaper. He is a reclusive man, who values that privacy over all else. I bet you no one knows exactly where he lives, except for his family and a few souls at Universal Press Syndicate. In fact, I was sure that the only time we'd see his name and picture in the news media again would be when either he returned to comics or when he died.

Yeah, I thought death would be more likely. Thus when I saw his pic on Yahoo, I was stunned.

Fortunately, he's not dead.

Unfortunately, Calvin and Hobbes is not coming back to the newspapers. Though, given his fears that he has reached as far as he could take the characters, I understand he doesn't want to run the characters into the ground.

Bill Watterson is in the news now because all of his strips are now available in print, mostly unedited, in the hardcover The Complete Calvin and Hobbes.

If I was to think about it, Watterson is one of my childhood idols because of that strip.
