One Year Since Liberation, Things Look Much More Bleak...
There should have been a celebration today, as this is the one year anniversary since the fall of Saddam Hussein. Had things worked as planned, Iraq would be well on the way to becoming a shining beacon of liberty, democracy, and self-sufficiency in the Middle East. Most of our soldiers would be back home or deployed elsewhere. There would be celebrations in Baghdad, probably not unlike our Independence Day here, with the exploding of fireworks in the night sky. No, the explosions they are hearing tonight are from gunfire and bombs set off by a resistance that is growing more entrenched and more popular.
