Every vote should be counted by hand; you can tell a computer to say anything.
I don't care what the voting machine looks like, but the ballots counted should be paper ballots. Always. One I can see that whom I voted for is who I actually did vote for. Anyone can program a computer to lie to me and say that it recorded a vote for A, all while secretly registering a vote for B. Thanks to intellectual property and patent law, that could be considered a trade secret, and thus guarded from inspection by independent observers. I do not want my vote to travel into the electronic ether.
