In Bed with Liars
Pity Andrew Sullivan, for the president has lied to him. But don't feel too bad for him, for the president was only following Andy's advice. Ah, poor Andrew. That's what you get for making your bed with liars.
Andrew, writing today for Salon, is puzzled by George W. Bush's budget. Andy is shocked, shocked that Bush has thrown fiscal discipline out the window and drove the country into structural deficits with prolific spending increases in security and tax cuts everywhere else. Andrew is insulted by the fact that Bush doesn't mention the white elephant in the budget, war with Saddam.
Andrew calls it "irresponsible bookkeeping," or "downright deception"!
But Andy, that's what you suggested he do roughly two years ago. For the New Republic, You told America "a rhetorical smoke screen is sometimes necessary." You celebrated lying to America.
So what has changed, my dear Andrew? Was it that he wasn't true to you? You was hoping that Bush felt as you did, and rein in Washington's spendthrift ways, using the excuse that there wasn't enough money for everyone. Promises made, promises unkept. Those were pretty words he whispered in your ear Andy. Pretty words, to make you his. But austerity, she's not a comely lass. He's moved on to prettier maidens, the ones who say you can pay for everything and cut taxes, too. So he's left, and now you're alone, used. But that's the risk of falling for rogues, Andy. You've made you bed with the charmer, now you must lie in it.
